What Does “Non-Ablative” Mean?
In the 1980s and 1990s, ablative lasers were popular for treating wrinkles, acne scars, and sun damage. They worked by removing (or ablating) the skin’s surface, which forced the body to rebuild fresh tissue but also meant longer downtime, redness, and higher risks of pigmentation changes.
Non-ablative lasers, by contrast, keep the surface layer of skin intact while delivering controlled heat deeper into the dermis. This approach is more conservative and ideal for mild to moderate photoaging.
The goal? To trigger collagen remodeling beneath the surface, safely and gradually.
How Light Stimulates Collagen
The skin’s main structural protein, collagen, gives it strength, elasticity, and smoothness. Over time, collagen production naturally slows but lasers can help restart the process.
